Coates 1989 GORDLETON in Hordle Gover derives it from hypothetical 'Gorleahingatun'='farm of those from Gorley' (place in Fordingbridge whose name means 'gore (wedge shaped) wood/clearing'). Against this is the late appearance of the '-ing-' forms. Worse, however, is the absence of any syllable between '-ing-' and '-tun'. But it is hard to countenance the alternative viz. a place name formed in '-tun' from an earlier place hypothetical name 'Gorleahing' for that would be scarcely intelligible as a Old English place name. Much more likely it is an '-ingtun' formation, but the first element is obscure, perhaps the personal name seen in 'Gorleston' (Norfolk). The modern form has been influenced by the name of the parish. |
